A new guide book describing walks in and around London is being launched at a Fitzrovia pub this Wednesday (12 November 2014). Freedom Pass London is written by local author and editor of Fitzrovia News Mike Pentelow and illustrated by photographer Peter Arkell.

Cover of book.
Freedom Pass London describes 25 walks that can be reached by train, tube or bus.

Intended as a companion to The Freedom Pass travel ticket it describes 25 destinations that can be reached free of charge and enjoyed by walking and visiting sites of interest. The book maps out walking routes across the city, through its open spaces, and among the suburbs to the areas of outstanding natural beauty that can be reached by train, tube or bus. It is the first book published to help city dwellers make use of the pass for days out and for suburban dwellers to enjoy London’s rich cultural heritage.

Although intended for the over 60s the trips described can be enjoyed by Oyster and Network Southeast card holders to gain off-peak access to places of interest and enjoy attractive and easily done walks.

Arkell and Pentelow are keen historians and enjoy a good meal and a pint. The guide includes historical descriptions of people and places and numerous places to feed one’s hunger and thirst along the way.

A route from Soho via Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury to Hampstead and Highgate recalls the life and days out enjoyed by Karl Marx and his family. While a train journey to Amersham leads the walker on a trail of fictional mystery through the villages where the TV series Midsomer Murders is set. Other walks follow the trail of the Wandle river from Colliers Wood to Croydon. A trip to Downe in Kent follows in the footsteps of Charles Darwin. With this book you can discover art treasures, little known churches, wildlife and nature reserves. There are detailed route instructions, colour photographs and an invaluable index.

Freedom Pass London is published by Bradt priced £12.99. The book will be launched at 7.30pm Wednesday 12 November 2014 at the King and Queen pub, 1 Foley Street, London W1W 6DL where copies will be available for the special price of £7 (including charity donation) from the authors.
