Lorries servicing the Crossrail development at Tottenham Court Road will join buses on diversion travelling through Fitzrovia’s streets at a rate of four to five per hour during the construction works.
The announcement was made by Transport for London (TfL) at a November meeting with residents. Residents were also told that all the east bound Oxford Street buses will turn left into Newman and then turn into Goodge Street as reported in Fitzrovia News (Autumn edition).
Residents groups have argued unsuccessfully with Tfl to prevent buses travelling through the heart of Fitzrovia.
Yoram Blumann of the Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association said: “This is a bitter disappointment for us all and in particular all those living along the diversion route.”
Lorries will travel along Mortimer street, Berners Street, Eastcastle Street and onto the Crossrail site, and then return up Newman Street, and then along Goodge Street and up Tottenham Court Road.
Then during 2011 lorries will exit the site and travel directly up Tottenham Court Road.
Fitzrovia and the Soho Square area will bear the brunt of the lorry activity for several years.
There will also be a lorry holding area in the southern part of Newman Street..
