Two staff from Fitzrovia based engineers Arup were recognised in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list. Terry Hill, chairman, Arup Group, was awarded the CBE  for services to Civil Engineering, and  Ms Joanna da Silva, Director of Arup’s international development team, received an OBE  for services to Engineering and Humanitarian Relief.

Mike Roberts, founder, director and winemaker at Sussex vineyard Ridgeview, was awarded an MBE. One of their products, Fitzrovia Sparkling Rose 2004, was served at the Buckingham Palace state dinner to honour the visit of President Barack Obama. Their wines are named after London neighbourhoods.

Others honoured included those working at institutions based around Fitzrovia:

Professor Jennifer Anne Thomas, Professor of Particle Physics, University College London. For services to Science.

Professor Nirmala Rao, Pro-Director (Learning and Teaching) and Professor of Politics, School of Oriental and African Studies. For services to Scholarship.

Sheila Maeve, Mrs Daley, Clerk to the Corporation, Westminster Kingsway College. For services to Further Education.
