The Middlesex Hospital Chapel at the heart of the building development known as Fitzroy Place is currently being restored as part of an agreement with Westminster City Council. It is a Grade II* listed building and it is the only part of the former hospital that still remains intact.

However, the developers Exemplar, Aviva and Kaupthing who are restoring it want to drop the words Middlesex and Hospital and call the building either Pearson Chapel or Pearson Hall. There is strong local and international feeling that the name Middlesex Hospital Chapel should be retained, not erased. Its name is part of its heritage status.

Fitzrovia News heard from many former staff and patients of the hospital, as well as workers, residents and business people in Fitzrovia. All of them expressed concern about the chapel losing its most visible connection with the former hospital.

As part of the planning permission for the redevelopment of the site, the developers entered into a section 106 agreement with the council to not only restore the chapel but to also set up a trust to look after it and keep it for community use. Westminster City Council have to agree the details of this trust before it is established.
