On Wednesday evening beneath the well-trodden pavement of Oxford Street the sounds of guitar and saxophone will be filling the void hidden from the day’s shoppers. Guitarist Jim Mullen and saxophonist Sean Khan will be serving a up a heady cocktail of jazz funk and DJ Eon Irving will be keeping the dancefloor filled.
Called the Phoenix Center it’s an occasional restaurant, regular indoor market, and night time club venue. This Wednesday’s club night is being organised by Azawala — Jos and Nick, two brothers of Ghanaian heritage — who apart from promoting jazz funk support and nurture emerging African artists with a strong emphasis on Ghana.
Azawala presents Hold That Note — A Wednesday Nite Jazz-Funk De-Lite, with Jim Mullen and Sean Khan, Wednesday 4 June at The Phoenix Center, 73 Oxford Street, London W1D 2EP.
The Center also hosts The Black Cinema Club which screens new and classic black film and documentary and provides a forum for film lovers wishing to have a shared group experience of watching black images, on the big screen. The club also fosters dialogue through intellectual analysis of a film’s subject matter. See the Black Cinema Club.
