A new food, drink and homewares shop has opened on the corner of Grafton Way and Whitfield Street. Its owner boasts that they sell fine food and only products “made in London”.

Named Ben’s House after owner Ben Leask it is very much a personal project. Leask says that after working for others in neighbouring Marylebone he wanted to set up his own business in Fitzrovia which he says is still relatively affordable compared to other central districts.

Ben’s House sells only food, drink and homewares made in London. “It’s my chance to showcase the wonderful producers, purveyors and friends I’ve met over the years in London,” says Leask.

“I stock the finest Grocery, the most charmed lifestyle and a counter to cherish.
Piles of fine hams, cheese and bread, bottles of wine, beer and spirits, stunning crockery, an abundance of treats and new things to try at every turn. Throw in some magazines and a candle and you may well move in,” he says.

It’s a far cry from Anwar’s cheap and cheerful Indian restaurant and takeaway that used to be there.

Like most new openings in Fitzrovia — whether it’s a hairdresser or camera shop — it contains the obligatory coffee machine complete with barrista set among the retail items.

We at Fitzrovia News don’t think coffee is produced in London — its probably from somewhere in Africa or Latin America.

“It’s roasted by three of the finest roasters in the world in West Norwood”, he replies.
