The 25th London Latin American Film Festival opens this month, with three venues in and around Fitzrovia taking part. Cinemagoers get free entry to all films screened as part of the festival in London, which showcases the best of new Latin American cinema.
The Bolivar Hall, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and University College London (UCL) will be among the venues showing films from the cutting edge of Latin audio-visual culture. The ten-day festival will also include screenings of short films and documentaries.
Films due to be shown at the Bolivar Hall include Libertador (The Liberator) about the life and times of Venezuelan military and political leader Simon Bolivar, and La Vaca (Holy Cow), a screwball comedy from Guatemala. UCL will be showing Gabo, The Magic Of Reality, a documentary about the life of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and author of the classic novel One Hundred Years Of Solitude. All the films screened as part of the festival programme will have English subtitles.
As well as cinema, the festival will feature Q & A sessions, art and photography exhibitions, music, dance, food and poetry to mark its Silver Jubilee this year.
The London Latin American Film Festival is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the distribution and appreciation of Latin American films in the UK. The film screenings and associated events organised also raise awareness of Latin American culture. In the past, the festival has been a launch pad for international box-office hits such as Wim Wenders’ Buena Vista Social Club and Alfonso Arau’s Like Water For Chocolate.
