One of the proposals is to create a cycling contraflow along Riding House Street. Image: Conway/WSP/Westminster City Council.

Westminster Council has drawn up plans to improve “cycle permeability” on three streets in Fitzrovia West and is seeking residents’ views on the proposals.

“The introduction of contra-flow cycling measures in Foley Street, Nassau Street and Riding House Street will provide cyclists with more attractive, safer and efficient routes to their destinations and encourage the use of sustainable forms of transport,” states a proposed traffic management order.

“This aligns with the City Council’s policy to encourage sustainable forms of transport and improve the cycling infrastructure.”

The plans also include changes to motor vehicle restrictions on four streets.

New double yellow line “at any time” waiting and loading restrictions on Candover Street, Mortimer Street, Nassau Street and Riding House Street, and a minor revision to the motorcycle parking place on Nassau Street, are necessary to ensure that crossing points are kept clear of vehicles to ensure good sight lines between pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, state the plans.

A narrow 50 yard section of Riding House Street outside All Souls School will also give cyclists travelling east priority over oncoming drivers.

WSP, who is carrying out the consultation on behalf of Westminster Council, says any observations or comments can be submitted by email to tmo.westminster@wsp.com before 6 March 2024 quoting the reference 7760-01/HWB.

At the end of the consultation period all responses received by this date will be forwarded to Westminster Council to take a decision on the proposals.
