Westminster Council plans to bring in motor vehicle restrictions along Great Titchfield Street to address concerns about traffic displacement from its Oxford Street Programme (OSP), and has this week opened a public consultation on the scheme.
Under the OSP, Mortimer Street in Fitzrovia and Wigmore Street in Marylebone will become a new east-west route for drivers who will be banned from using most of Oxford Street between 7am and 7pm every day of the week.
“Feedback received in relation to Great Titchfield Street, expressed a desire to maintain its status as a low traffic street and improve the pedestrian way,” says Westminster Council.
“Following discussions with neighbourhood groups such as FitzWest Neighbourhood Forum, the OSP team developed an intervention to mitigate traffic in the area.”
To address the problem of displaced motor traffic, Westminster Council plans to install bollards at the south side of the junction with Foley Street and Langham Street to prevent drivers using Great Titchfield Street as a through route from Mortimer Street while maintaining pedestrian and cycle movement.
Great Titchfield Street would become two-way working allowing access only between the road closure and Riding House Street.

“These small interventions will reduce the volume of vehicles heading north,” says Westminster Council.
“Instead, vehicles will use a range of other routes, reducing the through traffic on Great Titchfield Street and creating an enhanced pedestrian environment.”
Great Titchfield Street Consultation. Closes on 16 August 2024.
