Mortimer Street is closed between Great Portland Street and Great Titchfield Street from this week until sometime in October to allow work to be carried out as part of Westminster Council’s Oxford Street Programme (OSP).

It is a continuation of the ongoing highway works east of the junction with Regent Street and Langham Place which got underway earlier this year.

The works are part of the change from the current one-way working to two-way traffic movement along the full length of Mortimer Street and to make changes to parking and loading bays as well as footway “improvements”.

Westminster Council says that “pedestrian access around the work area and to all properties will be maintained during the works; however, due to the closure, vehicle access will be impacted on Mortimer Street on the section between Great Portland Street and Great Titchfield Street”.

Construction will take place during the hours of 8am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays from 8am to midday (when necessary).

The closure will mean that motor traffic on Clipstone Street and Maple Street to the north will be more congested than usual for the duration of the street works.

Westminster Council wants to complete the two-way streets on Mortimer Street in Fitzrovia and Wigmore Street in Marylebone in advance of works commencing on Oxford Street so as to “enhance traffic capacity and provide appropriate diversion routes during construction”.

The legacy of this work will be that Mortimer and Wigmore Streets will become an alternative parallel route bypassing Oxford Street when the Oxford Street traffic restrictions are brought in.
