An event for Camden Council tenants and leaseholders will go ahead this month to help residents to take an active role in their communities and housing services.

Taking place at the Crowndale Centre in Eversholt Street on 28 September, Resident Action Day will bring together residents groups and is being organised jointly by council officers and representatives of the five District Management Committees (DMCs) across the borough.

The DMCs consist of representatives of tenants’ and residents’ associations (TRAs) which act as advisory forums made up of residents and councillors to consider housing and environmental issues relating to Council tenancies and leases.

Each TRA needs to be properly constituted and registered to appoint a representative to the DMC. Residents in the council ward of Bloomsbury, which includes Fitzrovia, are brought together under the Holborn DMC.

Most of the representatives on each DMC are from the estates and larger housing blocks in the borough. However, residents living in Camden Council’s smaller “street properties” (a housing building that the Council owns that is not part of a housing estate) can be representative at the DMCs by the Camden Association of Street Properties.

District Management Committees meet several times a year.

“The [Resident Action] day will focus on the most pressing issues: opportunities for young people, healthy and safer communities, repairs and maintenance, digital spaces, and financial accountability,” say the organisers.

“The event type will be a drop-in space with a programme of stalls, speakers, and breakout activities offered throughout the day (where residents can share learning and information), demonstrate best practices, and explore issues openly.”

A screening of a film about the St Pancras Rent Strike will also be shown.

Council tenants and leaseholders who do not have an active TRA are encouraged to attend the Residents Action Day.
