Residents living on Cleveland Street near the junction with Howland Street will have to endure at least another 12 months of construction work as yet another major building project gets underway in Fitzrovia this month.
“Rainsford Contracts will be undertaking the works to construct the 5th Quad extension within the courtyard of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre building with the project commencing on Monday 6 January,” states a letter delivered to residential and business addresses near the site.
All but the smallest of delivery vehicles will enter the service yard of SWC through the entrance doors at 46 Cleveland Street during the construction work.
“To minimise and hopefully eliminate any inconvenience, all vehicles attending site will be directed on to the site to be unloaded within the existing loading bay after the doors are closed. There will be no unloading from lorries parked on the road barring small courier vans delivering single parcels. The project duration is 59 weeks completing in February 2026,” states Bob Winwright, project manager.
Planning permission was granted by Camden Council in 2023 for an extension within the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre estate for a four-storey building for research and teaching.
A public noticeboard giving updates on the construction work will be placed on the pocket park at the junction Cleveland Street and Howland Street.
Work is also ongoing immediately to the south at Bedford Passage, 44 Cleveland Street, which is being built by Morgan Sindall Construction.
