An art gallery in Fitzrovia known for its exhibitions of works by women photographers has suddenly closed after more than a decade on the corner of Candover Street and Riding House Street.
“On this most auspicious of days I would like to announce that after 13 incredible years, I have closed the gates under the green and gold mosaic portal of TJ Boulting for the final time,” said owner Hannah Watson in an announcement on 14 February.
“Sending my heartfelt thanks and love to all the artists, supporters, collectors and visitors that have passed through them. Many, many wonderful times have been had, weโve hosted some sensational exhibitions, worked with amazing artists and loved every second of it,” she says.
Watson also runs Trolley Books, and the publishing business will continue to be run albeit without a permanent home. Exhibitions will be put on from time to time at the nearby Fitzrovia Chapel which Watson has been involved with for a number of years.
“It is with a full heart I am looking forward to the future and continuing to work with incredible artists, publishing books with @trolleybooks and curating and consulting on exhibitions. And I hope whoever lives in TJ Boulting next appreciates they have the best loo in London. Lots of love.”
TJ Boulting took its name from the building which has a mosaic advertisement for boiler makers T J Boulting & Sons who constructed the site as part of their move into property development at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century.
The gallery opened in 2011 with Gigi Giannuzzi and Hannah Watson running the business. Giannuzzi died in 2013 and Watson took on the role of running the gallery alone.
Watson told The Art Newspaper that the decision to close the gallery had been on her mind for some time.
“Although it was a hard decision to choose to close the gallery, I feel the time is right to move on to new opportunities,” she said.
