Sainsbury’s ‘reviewing’ its future on Tottenham Court Road

Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd is “reviewing” the future of its presence on Tottenham Court Road, the company has told The Fitzrovia News.

Currently the supermarket chain has a “Sainsbury’s Local” store at 15-17 Tottenham Court Road, the largest of its three stores in Fitzrovia, the others being at Berners Street and Great Portland Street.

However, last month Sainsbury’s submitted planning and licensing applications to Camden Council for a new premises a short distance to the north at 21 Tottenham Court Road (also known as Unit C, Tottenham Court Walk) a shop unit less than half the size of its existing store.

The shop unit is currently occupied by cookware and kitchenware chain ProCook but the applications submitted by Sainsbury’s suggest it could be moving into the premises. The shop unit was also advertised last year as a “retail opportunity” by property owner Derwent London.

The Fitzrovia News contacted Sainsbury’s to ask what their plans were but they declined to say very much.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd, said: “Due to the lease expiring, we are reviewing our future plans for our Tottenham Court Road Local. We will keep our colleagues and customers updated.”

ProCook was contacted for comment but did not respond to our enquiry.

Sainsbury’s plans to review its offering follows the recent downsizing of Tesco stores at Goodge Street in Fitzrovia and Dean Street in Soho.
