Fitzrovia West Neighbourhood Forum has been given the green light to carry on for another five years, after a renewal application by the local planning group was approved this month by Westminster Council.

The group, known as FitzWest, was first set up in 2015 for local people to have a say on shaping land development in the area. Itโ€™s made up of local residents and businesses who also work together to make environmental improvements.

Westminster Council agreed to keep the forum going after a public consultation showed support and no objections. The decision was taken by Councillor Geoff Barraclough, the cabinet member for planning and economic development

The forum has already done work to make streets greener, improve air quality, and suggest better public spaces. It also helps check planning and licensing applications to make sure new changes are good for the area.

In the future, the group plans to plant more trees, improve cycling and green spaces, and update its local plan in 2026.

In its renewal application the Forum raised concerns about the Mayor of Londonโ€™s Oxford Street plans which they say threaten to undermine future environmental improvements in Fitzrovia West.

The Forum says it is exploring ways in which motor traffic passing through Fitzrovia can be reduced โ€” something that will be scuppered by the Oxford Street pedestrianisation plans, which would inevitably divert more vehicles through the area.

Westminster Council says the forum is an important part of giving locals a real voice in shaping their community.
