A woman aged in her 40s has been found dead in a tent at Mortimer Market, Fitzrovia, in circumstances that the police say are “unexpected but not suspicious”.
Known only as Rachel she was found on the afternoon of Sunday 13 July, reported the Camden New Journal.
Flowers and tributes have been left at the scene and voluntary group Streets Kitchen have provided support for people sleeping on the street nearby.
Police cordoned off the area for several days preventing other people who are sleeping on the street from accessing their tents and possessions.
A legal notice was placed on the cordon saying the tents and belongings will be seized by private security working on behalf of landowner UCLH Charity.
A spokesperson for UCLH Charity told the New Journal: โWe are very sorry to hear about the recent death, which is being investigated by the police. Earlier this month we wrote to Camden Council about the rough sleepers in Mortimer Market.
โWe need to undertake some work to the rear of our property. We have therefore issued a notice advising of our plans, and the support available.โ
However, the New Journal reports that no support had been provided when the paper went to press this week.
