Most of The Warren public open space and multi-use games area at the north end of Whitfield Street in Fitzrovia has been closed since the weekend and will remain closed until Tuesday 29 July due to a corporate event taking place.
A pre-booked private event by a sports and games company was taking place on Saturday and Sunday and is also due to take place again next Saturday and Sunday, an investigation by The Fitzrovia News has found.
Local residents said they saw equipment and hoarding being set up on Friday but had had no advance notice of the closure which has put out of use all of the public open space apart from a small seating and children’s play area at the rear of the site.
No notices providing an explanation have been posted on the site which is surrounded on three sides by people’s homes.
A publicity stunt by Nike and Lego was taking place on both days which was advertised on promotional websites. A large passenger coach arrived at the site on Sunday to drop off participants. Amplified music and a public address system could be heard from nearby streets.
The marketing material on the websites invited parents and guardians to sign up children aged 9 to 14 years old for a 90-minute slot for a play and sports experience, and to try on a pair of newly-released football boots, on condition they allowed their children to be photographed and filmed for promotional purposes.
According to Camden’s public licensing register, an application was made on 3 July to hold two “temporary events” at the public open space.
The first application was for 9am to 7pm on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July; and the second is for 9am to 7pm on Saturday 26 July, and 9am to 10pm on Sunday 27 July.
The Fitzrovia News will be contacting Camden Council for further details and a full explanation.
Crabtree Fields public park at the south end of Whitfield Street is also closed due to works being carried out by Camden Council.
