The carriageway of Tottenham Street between the junctions of Charlotte Street and Whitfield Street in Fitzrovia will be closed for a number of weeks this autumn for “essential emergency works” by Thames Water.
Tottenham Street will be closed to all traffic and all motor vehicle parking suspended from Monday 29 September to Sunday 19 October 2025, according to a letter delivered in September. And again from Monday 20 October until Sunday 9 November 2025, according to a second letter delivered in October.
“These are essential improvements to help repair a broken asset of ours and we will have to excavate the site,” states a letter sent to residents.
From the letter it is not clear whether the repair relates to a water mains or a sewer. However, for several months Thames has been visiting with pumping equipment to carrying out work to clear a blockage in a sewer tunnel beneath the carriageway.
The Fitzrovia News now understands that the work is to repair a collapsed sewer tunnel and that a second hole has to be dug to make good the repair.
Along with the Tottenham Street parking suspensions, part of Whitfield Street will have parking suspensions and one-way traffic will be changed to two-way working to enable a diversion route which will be sign-posted.
“If for any reason the duration [of the closure] is prolonged, we will notify you via letter,” says Thames.
