A public reading of stories and an open discussion about possible futures for the neighbourhood will be held at the Fitzrovia Chapel this month.
“Fitzrovia Futures 2055” was started as an opportunity for creative writers to use science fiction to imagine what the district might look like in 2055, and write about the type of community they envisage.
Ahead of the event there will be a drop-in session for members of the community to visit the chapel, discuss the project, add a “favourite place in Fitzrovia” to a map, and get to know those involved with the production.
Many years in the making, this year is the first that Fitzrovia Futures has held workshops and performances. During the project, six local specialists in future-looking themes and five people from the local community discussed the potential of Fitzrovia. The contents of those discussions were then used to write three short stories (by Ana Sun, Penny Walker and Stephen Oram).
Stephen Oram, science fiction writer and one of the organisers of the programme, described the workshops that have been taking place.
“We went around the room, and everybody took two minutes to say something about either their work or something that was important to them about their area. We then started thinking about different aspects of the future based on some of that, and we got people to think about ‘what might that look like if you were a teenager? 70 years old? If you worked in the area?’
“Multi-generational (culture) was a really big theme. The other (idea) is ‘what is the identity of Fitzrovia?’”
Further information about the subject specialists, the residents who informed the project, and everyone who helped the project, including the videographer, can be found on the Fitzrovia Futures website.
