Firefighters attended Warren Street in Fitzrovia to tackle a fire in a building near the underground station on the afternoon of Saturday 13 December.

The blaze had started in a kitchen belonging to local charity, Fitzrovia Youth in Action (FYA), in their offices which are located at basement level. No-one was hurt.

Part of the street was cordoned off between Whitfield Street and Tottenham Court Road.

An eyewitness told The Fitzrovia News that they saw and could smell smoke.

Firefighters could be seen checking neighbouring buildings.

Some residents were evacuated but were then allowed to return home after the blaze was brought under control.

The Fitzrovia News understands that the London Fire Brigade arrived around 3.30pm. The incident was over before 6pm.

In a statement released on Monday 15 December, FYA said:

“As we were hosting our Christmas Community Dinner on Saturday, our final youth-led event of the year, our office was sadly engulfed in smoke as our kitchen caught fire.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt, but our kitchen was destroyed, and there is smoke damage to a large part of our building.ย Our team has beenย working hard to ensure our operations can continue unaffected. We expect to have a workable office space again by the end of the year.”
