Camden Council is proposing changes to the carriageways and footways on Chitty Street and Scala Street, as well as part of Whitfield Street and Tottenham Street, with motor traffic restrictions and tree planting.

The plans, called Fitzrovia Area Phase 2, have been unveiled this month in a public consultation which is is open until 22 March 2026.

At Chitty Street drivers of motor vehicles would be prevented from entering or exiting at its junction with Charlotte Street using bollards, with only cyclists and pedestrians permitted. A raised crossing for pedestrians is planned for the junction with Whitfield Street. New trees would be planted and ideas for street art are being sought.

On Whitfield Street between the junction of Chitty Street and Tottenham Street a wider footway and new trees on the eastern side are proposed.

For Tottenham Street between Tottenham Court Road and Whitfield Street a pedestrian and cycle zone would be created. Bollards at either end would prevent entry for drivers of motor vehicles.

Scala Street would be converted to one-way motor traffic westbound with cycling allowed in both directions, and sections of footway would be widened, trees planted with seating added. Ideas for street art is also sought.

Across the area five new cycle storage hangers will be added, and space for hire cycles and e-scooters will be set out.

Twelve resident parking spaces across Whitfield Street, Chitty Street, Tottenham Street, Charlotte Street and Scala Street will be removed and two new disabled parking bays would be added.

Funding for the scheme comes from “planning gain” for the development at 100 Tottenham Court Road on the corner with Howland Street.

Camden says the changes will improve “the safety and accessibility for walking, wheeling and cycling in this area”, and increase “local biodiversity by introducing more plants and trees”.

Plans are also afoot for Goodge Place.

Phase 1 of the project is now nearing completion with improvements for cycling and greenery on Whitfield Street between Howland Street and Maple Street.
