This photo is of the Southampton Arms public house which used to stand at 141 Tottenham Court Road, and is from an archive of photographs held by Historic England.

At the time the photograph was taken the landlord of the pub was C H Good, whose name can be seen on the front of the building.

The photo is part of a collection of photographs of public houses in London originally commissioned by brewery Watney Mann and Company Limited.

It was taken in the 1880s and a map from that time shows the public house marked next to Southampton Court, the entrance to which can be seen in the photo.

The pub and street name is a reference to the Southampton Estate, a large area of land owned by the Fitzroy family.

The location was later redeveloped for the Maples furniture store, and is today on the site of the Lidl supermarket.
