It’s been on the corner of Charlotte Street and Windmill Street for 20 years but last week a note on the door told customers that the Thai restaurant was sorry to say it had served its last meal.
“It is with deep gratitude and warm hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Siam Central,” says the message.
“For so many years, this little corner of Charlotte Street has been our home — and yours. You brought birthdays, first dates, quiet lunches, and late dinners through our doors. Every single visit meant the world to us.
“To every guest, to every friend who became a regular — thank you. From the bottom of our hearts.”
It served its last meal on Thursday 30 April.
When it opened it claimed to be the first “Thai tapas” in London and offered takeaways and an “express menu” for those pressed for time, said a review for the Guardian newspaper in 2006.
“Can you really turn out a decent Thai meal for ยฃ5.50 in an area with such high rents and gullible tourists?” wrote the reviewer.
Well it did, and it lasted much longer than many restaurants in Fitzrovia which has seen a huge increase in eateries — many of which don’t even last a year, such is the competition and the cost of operating with those “high rents”.
The note on the door invites disappointed customers who turn up to find it closed to go to its other restaurant a short walk away, and which has been around for even longer, opening in 2000.
“The flavours of Thailand live on — join us at our sister restaurant Thai Metro, 38 Charlotte Street.”
