Transport for London (TfL) is warning of overnight road works and disruption in September to enable the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street by this autumn.

“We are preparing for Oxford Street to be traffic-free by mid to late October and, works are anticipated to take place in the Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Great Portland Street areas from 2 September 2026, subject to the necessary approvals and consents,” states TfL.

“These works will result in some changes to road layouts in the area including temporary road closures, lane restrictions, diversions and changes to parking and loading arrangements.ย To help keep disruption to a minimum, we will carry out work overnight wherever possible. However, some works will need to take place during the day.”

Disruption to bus routes is expected and passengers are advised to check with TfL Goย orย Journey Plannerย for the latest information before planning journeys.

TfL has issued a number of traffic orders affecting Binney Street, Duke Street, Gilbert Street, Great Castle Street, Great Portland Street, James Street, Margaret Street, Market Place, Marylebone Lane and Orchard Street “to support the Oxford Street pedestrianisation scheme that aims to close Oxford Street to vehicular traffic for designated hours between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street”.

The changes include moving “parking places, taxi ranks, loading and waiting restrictions”, as well as the introduction of “two-way working, prohibition of vehicles, removal of existing banned right turn, removal of existing banned left turn, prescribed new right turns and reversal of one-way working”.
