A new exhibition at the Fitzrovia Chapel in September brings together a selection of photographs by Carole Rawlinson FRPS who documented the final days of the Middlesex Hospital in 2005, as it was being cleared and closed ahead of its eventual demolition.
Having given birth to her daughters at the hospital, Rawlinson returned over several months to photograph its spaces, objects and working life, capturing the atmosphere of a much-loved London institution before it disappeared forever. Her project also included interviews with members of the Middlesex community, creating a valuable record of the people and memories connected to the hospital.
The exhibition will coincide with the launch of a reprint of Rawlinson’s Middlesex Memories book, which has been out of print for many years since its original publication in 2007. There will also be other new and revised publications focused on the hospital and chapel, including a brand-new guidebook focused on the Middlesex Hospital.
