Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party of England and Wales and a member of the London Assembly, has announced that he wants to be a candidate for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, after Keir Starmer announced he would be resigning his seat.
Polanski told the Camden New Journal: “We know that the Greens can win here, and by electing me, voters will have someone who will always fight their corner — never scared of big donors or the party whip. Too often Labour has stood up for corporations and big money. I will stand up for people struggling to pay their bills.”
Nominations for the Green Party candidate for the parliamentary seat opened today with Camden Green Party members voting to select their preferred candidate on Thursday 10 September and the result declared the following day.
Polanski is likely to win that vote from the local party.
The announcement was the second “exclusive” this week for the Camden New Journal which also broke the story of Starmer’s resignation.
A date for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election has not yet been set but will likely take place shortly after the autumn party conference season has ended.
