Camden and Westminster councils have this month published traffic orders to create a new “semi-segregated” contraflow cycle lane on Cleveland Street running between Maple Street and Goodge Street, to enable a better connected and safer cycle route through Fitzrovia.

The proposals for Cycleway 63 were first revealed in early 2023 and the plans have now been modified ahead of the route being constructed along the borough boundary that runs down the middle of Cleveland Street.

The main change from the 2023 consultation is the removal of the current cycle contraflow into Clipstone Street, which may concern cyclists who make use of it.

According to the Camden and Westminster traffic orders, cycling would be permitted southbound on this section of Cleveland Street, and enable connections with existing cycling contraflows on Foley Street, Riding House Street, and Tottenham Street.

It would also allow cyclists heading east along Clipstone Street to turn right into Cleveland Street.

The traffic orders also creates a new zebra crossing on Cleveland Street just north of the junction with Foley Street, and also on the western end of Maple Street.

To enable the southbound “semi-segregated” cycle lane, no parking or loading would be permitted on this stretch of Cleveland Street, and existing “blue badge” and “white badge” parking relocated to nearby streets.

Any comments on the respective traffic orders must be made by 9 July to WSP who are acting for Westminster Council; and by 11 July 2025 to Camden Council.
