Sumayyah Janan Rahman has won the Fitzrovia Futures short story competition for young people, held as part of London Festival of Architecture 2026.
Rahman, 22, is an aspiring writer and creative who lives in London and took part in the competition held earlier this year.
The announcement was made by the Fitzrovia Futures group on 29 July.
The judges said her winning entry entitled “The Joyful Playground” was “very synergistic”, touched on “various architectural aspects”, and was a welcome “positive story about the future”.
Fitzrovia Futures worked with Fitzrovia Community Centre, the London Festival of Architecture, Architects Climate Action Network, and the Neurodiversity Architecture Network.
Continuing this summer and into autumn, they will have a stall at the Fitzrovia Fete on Sunday 9 August where you can meet the project team, and a special event of live readings on Monday 7 September at the Fitzrovia Chapel.
September’s event will be a one-off collaboration with Liars’ League, with a selection of ten-minute stories looking at “where we are now” and asking “What if …?”
It will blend storytelling and theatre, with professional actors bringing many futures to life with readings of speculative stories inspired by those who live, work and study in Fitzrovia.
“From Black Mirror-esque dystopian visions of illegal rice farms, turf wars with Bloomsbury and Marylebone, and crime in a two-tier society, to community gardens, communal kitchens and local artisans, all watched over by the BT Tower, these stories give an exclusive glimpse into all the news that hasn’t happened yet …” say the organisers.
