The Greens and Labour were out in force over the weekend with residents across the Camden side of Fitzrovia receiving the first leaflets seeking their support for the forthcoming Holborn and St Pancras by-election.

Less than a week after Keir Starmer MP announced that he was standing down early from his seat both the Green Party and Labour have gone into full battle mode.

While yet to be formally selected, Zack Polanski is featured on an A4-sized leaflet with a message to voters in Holborn and St Pancras.

“The by-election for a new MP here is a going to be a two-horse race between Labour and the Greens,” he proclaims.

The Green Party leaflet shows a bar chart of current party support projected by Electoral Calculus for 1 September 2026. It shows Labour leading on 34.6 per cent with the Greens in second place on 30.5 per cent.

Labour’s leaflet is half the size and says “we’re proud of our record here”.

Both the Greens and Labour will announce their candidates this week which means a fresh load of leaflets and door step visits will follow in the weeks up to the by-election which is expected to be late this autumn.

Zack Polanski the leader of the Green Party in England and Wales and a London Assembly member is likely to be selected as the candidate.

For Labour, Camden Council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali is tipped as the front runner for their candidate.

Former Labour council leader Richard Olszewski lost his seat when the Greens took all three seats off Labour in Holborn and Covent Garden ward in May’s local elections.

At that election the Greens also gained one councillor in Bloomsbury ward and currently have two councillors in Regent’s Park ward — all in Holborn and St Pancras constituency, and all taken from Labour.

While Labour has a majority on Camden Council, the Greens are also the largest opposition group — known as the Green Progressive Alliance.
