Westminster Council has approved plans for a two-way cycleway to run along Cleveland Street between Maple Street and the junction of Newman Street in Fitzrovia.
The project known as Cycleway 63 has been designed in collaboration with Camden Council as the route runs along the borough boundary.
It will connect with Cycleway 27 which runs east-west through the neighbourhood and will link with an existing short section of protected cycle track on Clipstone Street.
Plans for the scheme include removing all motor vehicle parking and loading, existing โblue badgeโ and โwhite badgeโ parking relocated to nearby streets, changes to traffic control lights, additional zebra crossings, and southbound cyclists will travel in a kerb-protected contraflow.
The scheme is due to be implemented in phases between October 2025 and February 2026, and is part of a larger project which will in future provide a north-south safe cycle route from Fitzrovia across the West End to Pimlico.
Westminster Council says the project “will deliver a range of improvements designed to enhance the local environment for sustainable and active travel journeys” and forms a key part of its transport policy.
An initial public consultation on the scheme took place in early 2023 which showed a majority of those who responded in support of it, states a council report.
A further consultation on the traffic management order (TMO) received objections to the loss of on-street parking and a number of concerns about access for pick up and set down by taxis and private hire vehicles.
“The pick-up and drop-off of passengers by private car or taxi is permitted on double yellow lines, or where double yellow kerb blips are present, provided the vehicle waits for as long as necessary for passengers to enter or exit the vehicle, including handling any personal luggage,” states a council report on the decision taken in September.
The scheme will cost ยฃ1.144mn with more than half the funding coming from High Speed 2 (HS2) Ltd and a contribution of ยฃ40k coming from Camden Council.
Westminster City Council, decision: Cycleway 63 Implementation.
